A Year of Muddy Hands & New Friends: How Crisanthemum Studios Is Building Community in Pilot Mountain, NC

One year ago, Crisanthemum Studios was still becoming. We were building shelves, learning rhythms, meeting new faces, and figuring out what it looks like to create a studio that feels like home—not just for pottery lovers, but for anyone craving connection, creativity, and a place to exhale.

If you’ve been in the studio even once, you know what I mean: the way conversations start quietly and then turn into laughter… the way people sit down as strangers and leave feeling a little more known. That’s not an accident. That’s the whole point.

Crisanthemum Studios was built on a belief: creativity brings people together. Whether you’re here to glaze your own pottery, take a workshop, celebrate something special, or just try something new, the goal is always the same: make space for you to feel welcome and inspired.

The year that stretched us

I won’t pretend this first year has been effortless. Small business growth is equal parts joy and grit. There have been long days, last-minute pivots, and moments where the behind-the-scenes work felt heavier than the clay.

But here’s the truth: the studio keeps moving forward because of the people who walk through the door. Your presence matters. Your curiosity matters. Your willingness to try something new matters.

And on the days when it feels like a lot… I think about what happens at the tables.

What community looks like here

Community doesn’t always show up as a big moment. Most of the time it looks like something simple:

  • A mom and daughter painting side-by-side

  • Someone glazing their first mug and saying, “Wow, I did that!”

  • A group of friends turning “let’s do something fun” into a tradition

  • Someone walking in nervous… and leaving proud

That’s what handmade does. It slows us down. It makes room for connection. And when you glaze your own pottery here, you’re not making something off a factory line—you’re creating a one-of-one piece that carries your story.

No two pieces are the same. No two people are the same. And we love it that way.

Why your stories matter (and why we’re collecting them)

If you’ve ever left the studio feeling lighter, calmer, more confident, or just plain happy—I want to hear it.

Not because we need hype. Because your words help us do two important things:

  1. Remember what we’re building.

  2. Help new people feel safe walking in for the first time.

A testimonial is more than a review—it’s a welcome sign for someone who doesn’t know if they “belong” in an art space yet.

So here’s my ask: if Crisanthemum Studios has meant something to you, would you take two minutes and share your experience? Click here to fill out our quick online testimonial form. We read every single one. And we appreciate them more than you know.

From Pilot Mountain to wherever you’re coming from

Whether you live right here in Pilot Mountain, nearby in Surry County, or you’re visiting from Mount Airy (or beyond), I hope this studio feels like a bright spot in your day—something you look forward to, something that reminds you that you’re allowed to create.

Thank you for being part of our first year. Thank you for supporting handmade. And thank you for keeping me at the wheel making pottery for real life, and watching it become part of yours.

With muddy hands and a warm heart,

Cris
