Message from the Potter: Made by Hand, Made Your Own

One of the things I love most about Crisanthemum Studios is that what we make here never ends with us.

Yes, we make it by hand. We throw the pots, shape the clay, trim the edges, fire the pieces, and prepare them with care. But then something beautiful happens — you make it your own.

That is the heart of what we do.

Crisanthemum Studios is the only pottery studio in North Carolina where we make it by hand and you make it your own. Every piece starts in our hands, but it becomes something entirely different once it reaches yours. The glaze colors you choose, the brushstrokes you make, the way your personality shows up in the final piece — all of that matters.

It turns pottery into something more than an object. It turns it into a collaboration.

And no two pieces are ever exactly alike.

That feels especially meaningful because no two people are exactly alike either.

Some people glaze boldly. Some choose soft, quiet colors. Some paint with careful precision, and some follow instinct and joy. Some come in knowing exactly what they want to create, and others discover it as they go. Every finished piece tells a little story about the person who made it their own.

That is what makes glaze-your-own pottery so special.

A mug can be a mug. A bowl can be a bowl. A plate can be a plate. But when someone adds their own touch, it becomes personal. It becomes memory, expression, personality, and experience all wrapped into one handmade thing. The piece may begin here, but it does not truly become itself until someone else steps in and adds their color, their creativity, and their way of seeing.

We love that.

At Crisanthemum Studios in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, we want creativity to feel welcoming, not intimidating. We want people to come in and feel free to experiment, to play, to try something new, and to leave with a piece that feels like theirs. Not perfect. Not identical. Theirs.

That idea is bigger than pottery.

There is something powerful about making something useful and beautiful with your own hands — even if the piece began in someone else’s studio. Maybe especially then. It reminds us that life is not about being identical. It is about bringing who we are to what has been placed before us and making it meaningful in our own way.

Maybe that is part of why handmade work matters so much.

It holds process.

It holds personality.

It holds imperfection.

It holds story.

And in a world full of mass production and sameness, there is something deeply human about choosing a piece that was made by hand and then making it your own.

So this month, I’m reflecting on how meaningful that really is. Not just in pottery, but in life. A piece of pottery. A creative practice. A gathering space. A life. All of it shaped, colored, and brought to life by the hands that touch it.

Thank you for letting us make it by hand — and for making it your own.

With muddy hands and a warm heart,

Cris
